इथियोपिया में हेली गुब्बी ज्वालामुखी के हजारों वर्षों बाद फटने के बाद उसकी राख मध्य पूर्व के बड़े हिस्से में फैल गई है, जिससे अंतरराष्ट्रीय उड़ानों के लिए खतरा बढ़ गया है। इसी संभावित खतरे को देखते हुए भारतीय डीजीसीए ने सभी भारतीय एयरलाइंस को तुरंत प्रभाव से सेफ्टी एडवाइजरी जारी की है। राख के बादल के मस्कट फ्लाइट इन्फॉर्मेशन रीजन की ओर बढ़ने से भारत आने–जाने वाले कई रूट प्रभावित हुए हैं। ज्वालामुखीय राख उड़ान के इंजन, विंडशील्ड और एयर सिस्टम को भारी नुकसान पहुंचा सकती है, जिसे ध्यान में रखते हुए एयरलाइंस को अपने ऑपरेशनल मैनुअल की समीक्षा कर कॉकपिट और केबिन क्रू को आवश्यक प्रोटोकॉल की जानकारी देने के निर्देश दिए गए हैं। डीजीसीए ने एयरलाइन ऑपरेटरों को सलाह दी है कि वे उड़ान योजना और रूटिंग को नवीनतम मौसम अपडेट और NOTAM के आधार पर एडजस्ट करें और संदिग्ध राख या इंजन में किसी गड़बड़ी की तुरंत रिपोर्ट करें। स्थिति गंभीर होने के कारण KLM ने अपनी एम्स्टर्डम-दिल्ली और दिल्ली-एम्स्टर्डम उड़ानों को रद्द कर दिया है। वहीं अकासा एयर ने भी बयान जारी करते हुए कहा कि वह स्थिति पर लगातार नजर रख रही है और सुरक्षा को सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता देते हुए सभी आवश्यक कदम उठाए जा रहे हैं। बताया जा रहा है कि राख का गुबार पूर्व की ओर बढ़ते हुए अब उत्तरी भारत की दिशा में भी बह रहा है, जिस पर अधिकारी लगातार नजर बनाए हुए हैं।
